Switzerland’s capital and home of Rösti
If there is one dish you definitely have to try when in Switzerland, then this would be Bern’s famous Rösti dish.
A long time ago, farmers in the Canton of Bern used to eat Rösti for breakfast to get enough energy to work in the —usually quite chilly— Swiss countryside. Today, Rösti is the main accompaniment to meat dishes, especially veal sausages, and it has become the Swiss-German national dish.
The base of this meal is grated potatoes fried in a buttered pan until they get a nice golden brown colour and a crispy consistency.
There are many variations of Rösti. You can have Rösti mixed with many different ingredients, such as onions, bacon and cheese.
