In the hearing of the name Bern you may think of a bear, and it is actually not a coincidence that the city’s armature depicts a bear. The legend says that the founder of Bern, Berchtold V from Zähringen, victoriously killed a bear for his first time in Bern and that is how the name Bern was born.
At the very same location, a pit (Swiss German: Bärengraben) was built in 1857, to host brown bears, and it became a nice attraction. This pit will soon be replaced by a very nice bear park providing a more natural environment for the bears.
