Marketplace and Town hall
The marketplace (German: Marktplatz) is the very central place of the city, where you will find (everyday, except Sundays), an open market with fresh food, such as vegetables, fruits, many different cheeses and also pretty flowers and bouquets.
The Marktplatz is dominated by the city Town Hall (German: Rathaus), an impressive dark red building built in the fourteenth century, which is now used as the seat of Basel-City’s (German: Basel Stadt) cantonal government. The building has undergone several renovations and extensions have been appended to it to lead to a building that combines the Renaissance architecture with the more modern style of Art Nouveau.
