The world of animals
One of the things you should not miss is Basel’s zoo? After the Rhine Falls in St. Gallen, the Basel Zoo with its one million visitors per year is the most visited attraction in Switzerland. The Basel Zoo, which opened its gates to the public already in 1874, has gathered over the time more than 600 different species, which sums up to a total of approximately 6,000 animals. During the last few decades, the zoo has constantly improved and its environment has been enhanced in favour of the animals that it hosts. The snow leopards, for example, now have a high mountain enclosure near to their favorite prey, the Himalayan tahr.
There are different commented guided tours around the zoo with themes, such as the monkey’s house, the vivarium, the bird’s house and Australia. A big restaurant with a terrace will allow you to quench your thirst at any time and will serve you tasty food. A small, but welcoming, souvenir shop is also available in the zoo.
The zoo is very quick to reach; it is a 5 minute walk from the main train station or 5 minutes by tram from the city centre and it is open everyday of the year.
